Pantera was an influential American heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Arlington, Texas. The band’s classic lineup consisted of Phil Anselmo (vocals), Dimebag Darrell (guitar), Rex Brown (bass), and Vinnie Paul (drums). Initially starting as a glam metal band, Pantera shifted their sound in the late 1980s and early 1990s to a heavier and more aggressive style, pioneering what would become known as groove metal. Their breakthrough album, “Cowboys from Hell” (1990), helped establish them as leading figures in the metal scene. Subsequent albums like “Vulgar Display of Power” (1992) and “Far Beyond Driven” (1994) further cemented their reputation, with the latter debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Pantera disbanded in 2003, and in 2004, Dimebag Darrell was tragically killed during a performance by another band. The band’s music continues to be celebrated for its intensity and influence on the metal genre.

After 2003, Pantera essentially disbanded following a period of tension and inactivity. The members pursued separate projects, with guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul forming Damageplan. Tragically, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage in 2004, which devastated the metal community and effectively ended any immediate hopes of a Pantera reunion.

In the years following, singer Phil Anselmo continued with various music projects, including Down and Superjoint Ritual, while bassist Rex Brown also pursued other musical endeavors. Vinnie Paul focused on his band Hellyeah until his death in 2018.

Despite individual activities, the surviving members of Pantera did not reunite as a band for many years. However, in 2022, it was announced that Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown would perform under the Pantera name with Zakk Wylde on guitar and Charlie Benante on drums, in tribute to the legacy of the band. This marked a significant return to the stage for Pantera, albeit with a new lineup, and was met with both excitement and controversy among fans and critics due to the absence of the Abbott brothers.
