Dave Grohl, often hailed as the “nicest guy in rock,” faced a significant public backlash in 2024 after admitting to infidelity and revealing he had fathered a child outside of his marriage.
Before this revelation, Grohl and the Foo Fighters were having a typically eventful year, touring in support of their 2023 album, But Here We Are. However, everything changed in September when Grohl took to Instagram to announce, “I’ve recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage.”
Grohl has been married to Jordyn Blum since 2003, and the couple shares three daughters. Addressing the situation, Grohl stated, “I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness.”
In the wake of the announcement, the Foo Fighters canceled their only remaining tour date.
Meanwhile, Jane’s Addiction, another ’90s alternative rock staple, experienced their own dramatic fallout. 2024 marked the return of their classic lineup—Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins, and Eric Avery—for the first time in 14 years. The reunion included the release of “Imminent Redemption,” their first single in over three decades.
But in September, their momentum came to an abrupt halt when a Boston show ended in chaos as Farrell punched Navarro onstage. Days later, the band announced they were taking “time away as a group,” with Navarro, Perkins, and Avery citing Farrell’s “continuing pattern of behavior” and struggles with “mental health difficulties.” Farrell later issued an apology for his “inexcusable behavior.”
Ironically, Jane’s Addiction released a new single, “True Love,” shortly after the incident, though the band remained on hiatus.
Amid these personal and professional setbacks, the alternative rock community suffered another loss with the death of Steve Albini in May. A pivotal figure of the ’90s, Albini was celebrated for engineering Nirvana’s In Utero and iconic records for the Pixies, PJ Harvey, Bush, and The Breeders.
Despite the turbulence, not all the news was bleak for ’90s rock veterans. Pearl Jam made a triumphant return with their album Dark Matter and completed a successful tour unmarred by any onstage drama.
For fans of the era, 2024 was a rollercoaster year, proving that even legends aren’t immune to personal and professional turmoil.
