“Anora” Triumphs at 97th Academy Awards

In the lead-up to the 97th annual Academy Awards, two musical films and a period drama dominated the nominations: “Emilia Perez” with 13, and both “Wicked” and “The Brutalist” with 10 each. The ceremony took place Sunday, March 2, at Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.

Despite starting the night with six nominations, “Anora” emerged as the biggest winner, securing five awards, including best picture, best director, best actress, original screenplay, and editing.

Pop star and actress Ariana Grande received her first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her role as Glinda in “Wicked.” Her co-star, Cynthia Erivo, was nominated for best actress for her portrayal of Elphaba, but they lost to Zoe Saldaña from “Emilia Perez” (best supporting actress) and Mikey Madison from “Anora” (best actress). “Emilia Perez” also won best original song for “El Mal.”

“A Complete Unknown,” the Bob Dylan biopic, was nominated for eight awards but did not win any. Its nominations included best picture, best actor for Timothée Chalamet, best supporting actor for Edward Norton, and best director for James Mangold.
