A new musical titled “Fire & Rain,” featuring the songs of James Taylor, is currently in development. The production will feature an original story by Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Tracy Letts, with direction by Tony Award winner David Cromer. Although the show is still in its early developmental stages, it promises to bring Taylor’s iconic music to a theatrical setting for the first time in a major production.
The title “Fire & Rain” is derived from one of Taylor’s most famous songs, which was released in 1970 on his album “Sweet Baby James” and achieved significant commercial success. Taylor, a six-time Grammy Award winner, is known for hits such as “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Sweet Baby James.” While his music has previously appeared in smaller theatrical projects, this marks the first major use of his catalog in a theatrical production.
The production team includes notable figures such as Gail Berman, Sam Feldman, Michael Gorfaine, and Broadway theater owner Jimmy Nederlander, with additional collaboration from Frank Marshall and Jere Harris.
Tracy Letts, known for his acclaimed play “August: Osage County” and other works like “Killer Joe” and “Bug,” brings his storytelling expertise to the project. David Cromer, renowned for directing productions such as “The Band’s Visit,” which earned him a Tony Award, will helm the direction of the musical. The collaboration between Letts and Cromer is anticipated to create a compelling narrative that complements Taylor’s timeless music.
Details regarding the production timeline have yet to be announced, but the involvement of such prominent figures in theater suggests a highly anticipated premiere.
