The Nye County Sheriff’s Office engaged in the removal of seven tigers from a property in Pahrump due to concerns over their living conditions. The operation involved collaboration with code enforcement and animal services and was expected to be an extensive process. The tigers were evaluated by a veterinarian and were being transported to a sanctuary, the location of which was not disclosed, pending further orders.
The tigers were seized from Karl Mitchell’s residence, who was arrested for resisting arrest and detained at the Nye County Detention Center. Sheriff Joe McGill indicated that the issue was related to a longstanding permitting problem, as Mitchell had been keeping the tigers without the necessary permits for several years. The process began in response to an eviction notice, prompting authorities to act for the safety of both the community and the animals.
Despite the removal, the sheriff’s office noted that the tigers appeared to be in good condition, though concerns about their living situation remained. The coordination with an out-of-state sanctuary aims to provide a safe environment for the tigers until further decisions are made.
