Las Vegas Veterinarian Under Investigation for Animal Cruelty Missing Near Lake Mead

The search for Shawn Frehner, a Las Vegas equine veterinarian under investigation for animal cruelty, has entered its second day. Frehner, identified by sources, went missing near the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The National Park Service is leading a multi-agency search, which includes the Nevada Department of Wildlife and volunteers from Red Rock Search and Rescue. Air assistance is being provided by the Metropolitan Police Department.

The investigation into Frehner began after a criminal complaint was filed by Shawna Gonzalez, accusing Frehner of mistreating her horse, Big Red. Gonzalez shared a video on social media purportedly showing Frehner kicking the horse. The video has been circulated by animal rights groups, leading to public outcry and comments accusing Frehner of animal abuse.

Frehner’s explanation, as shared by a friend, claims the horse was aggressive and that he unintentionally kicked it while trying to reposition it for better breathing. His friend, Dania Spor-Orellana, expressed disbelief at the actions depicted in the video but suggested there might be more to the story.

Frehner had previously faced disciplinary action in 2016 for failing to maintain proper records and improperly dispensing medication. He was placed on probation, fined, and required to improve his record-keeping practices. His veterinarian license is set to expire soon, with no other complaints currently listed on his file.

The search for Frehner continues, with no new details or arrests announced.
