The Tennessee Board of Parole has unanimously recommended a pardon for country music artist Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord. This recommendation now awaits the decision of Governor Bill Lee. Jelly Roll, originally a rapper turned country singer, has been candid about his past criminal record and the journey he’s taken to overcome it. His criminal history includes a robbery conviction at age 17 and drug charges at age 23. Additionally, he has misdemeanors for driving without a license and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jelly Roll’s request for a pardon is driven by the desire to travel internationally with fewer restrictions, as his criminal record currently complicates this process. He recently expressed the importance of sharing his message of redemption through music and faith, aiming to inspire others who might find themselves in similar situations.
During a recent parole board hearing, several witnesses, including Nashville Sheriff Daron Hall, advocated for Jelly Roll, highlighting his transformation and contributions to society. Notably, he has engaged in various charitable activities, such as visiting jails and rehabilitation centers, feeding the homeless, and supporting at-risk youth through charitable donations.
Governor Lee, who has issued over 90 pardons since taking office, stated that each clemency case is handled with thorough consideration. Jelly Roll hopes that a pardon will not only facilitate his music career but also allow him to engage in future missionary work.
