Cody Johnson Talks About His Multiple CMA Award Nominations

Cody Johnson heads into the 58th Annual CMA Awards as one of the top nominees with five nods, placing him just behind Morgan Wallen (who has seven) and tying with Chris Stapleton. Johnson’s nominations include Album of the Year for Leather, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Single, Song, and Music Video of the Year for both “Dirt Cheap” and “The Painter.”

In a recent interview, Johnson reflected on the overwhelming response to his nominations, recalling how he initially thought something had gone wrong due to the flood of missed calls and messages. “I go home and check out completely,” he shared, adding that he was shocked to find the messages were all celebratory congratulations rather than bad news. His wife, Brandi, confirmed the exciting news, and Johnson said he couldn’t help but feel grateful.

Having spent nearly two decades building his career, Johnson acknowledges how meaningful this recognition feels, especially after being told early on that his style was “too country” for mainstream success. “I think it’s awesome,” he said, viewing these nominations as a validation of the hard work he’s put in over the years.

The 58th Annual CMA Awards will air live on ABC from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, November 20, hosted by Lainey Wilson, Luke Bryan, and Peyton Manning. Fans can also catch it on Hulu the following day.
