Holiday Activities in Central Ohio

Family Traditions: Holiday Activities in Central Ohio

Like many families, we cherish holiday traditions. From well-known attractions to lesser-known gems, we make sure to fill our December calendar with seasonal experiences.

Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve visited the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (4850 W. Powell Rd., Powell) during this festive time of year. With millions of LED lights illuminating the grounds, Wildlights has become a seasonal rite of passage. For parents, I recommend picking up a spiked cocoa to enjoy during the adventure.

German Village Lights

German Village sets the tone for the holidays with its annual lighting event. This year, closing a section of Third Street to vehicular traffic enhanced walkability—a blessing for families with young kids. The neighborhood comes alive with lights, displays, vendors, and music. We always enjoy homemade kettle corn, a visit with Santa, and a stop at The Book Loft. Mark your calendar for the first Sunday in December to join in the fun.

Timbuk Farms

A trip to Granville to visit Timbuk Farms (2030 Timbuk Rd.) is a holiday highlight. Known as one of Central Ohio’s largest Christmas tree farms, it earned its name from being as far out as “Timbuktu.” The 300-acre farm offers an impressive operation, from tree cutting to bus transportation, hauling, and wrapping. The main barn hosts food, crafts, and Santa, making it a one-stop festive outing.

Lucy Depp Park Lights

Driving through neighborhoods to admire Christmas lights is a cherished tradition, but Lucy Depp Park in Powell takes it up a notch. This ten-acre display, created by eight homeowners, features a half-mile loop synchronized to festive music. New this year is a scavenger hunt. While it’s free to drive through, donations support Peace for Paws Ohio.

WonderLights Christmas

For a grander drive-thru experience, WonderLights Christmas at the Hartford Fairgrounds (14028 Fairgrounds Rd., Hartford) is a must-see. Featuring one million LED lights, the display is well worth the 40-minute drive from Columbus. Be prepared, though—the entire experience can take up to an hour.

Some of these attractions extend into January, but closer to the holiday, we always plan a day downtown for rapid-fire stops at several beloved destinations:

  • The Nativity at Cathedral Square – Formerly State Auto’s Christmas Corner, this life-size nativity scene offers a history lesson and a reminder of the season’s true meaning.
  • Huntington Holiday Train – Located at the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s main branch, this intricate display captivates kids and adults alike.
  • Columbus Commons and Scioto Mile – These downtown parks transform into a winter wonderland of lights.
  • Conservatory Aglow – At Franklin Park Conservatory, immersive light installations, outdoor games, and gingerbread houses delight visitors of all ages.

From city lights to countryside charm, Central Ohio has something for everyone this holiday season.
