Meg White Celebrates 50th and Jack White Pays Tribute

December 10 marked the 50th birthday of Meg White, and her former White Stripes bandmate and ex-husband, Jack White, took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message in her honor.

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY to my big sister, the great Meg White,” Jack wrote. “There’s only one of you, Meggo. They broke the mold. You’re still inspiring people, including me. Love you so much. -Jack III

The White Stripes officially disbanded in 2011, parting on good terms to “preserve what is beautiful and special about the band” and to protect its legacy. Since then, Jack White has embarked on a successful solo career, releasing six albums, including 2024’s No Name. The album’s raw, garage-rock energy hearkens back to The White Stripes’ early days and earned Jack the title of Artist of the Year from Consequence.

While Jack has remained prolific in the music world, Meg White has chosen a life out of the public eye. She has declined interviews, avoided the spotlight, and embraced a quiet existence since the band’s split. However, her impact remains undeniable. Earlier this year, Meg was named one of the 100 greatest drummers of all time by Consequence, with Editorial Director Ben Kaye noting, “Meg White’s minimalist drumming style was the perfect counterbalance to Jack’s shredding—a primal dynamic that gave The White Stripes their definitive garage stomp. Jack brought the flash, and Meg brought the feel.

Despite her retreat from the limelight, Meg and Jack briefly reunited earlier this year—not musically, but legally—to file a lawsuit against Donald Trump for the unauthorized use of their iconic song “Seven Nation Army” in a campaign ad. The lawsuit was later withdrawn.

As Meg White celebrates her milestone birthday, her legacy as one of rock’s most unique and influential drummers continues to resonate with fans and fellow musicians alike.
