Robert Smith has shared details about two songs set for inclusion on The Cure’s forthcoming album, which might be released as early as this summer. In an interview with Radio X, Smith discussed two tracks that the band has performed live but did not include on their November release, “Songs Of A Lost World.”
The first song, “It Can Never Be The Same,” was initially performed in 2016. Smith mentioned that this song of grief, which was once titled “Christmas Without You,” is likely to appear on the new album, as it has been played for a long time. The second track, “A Boy I Never Knew,” was originally written for The Cure’s 2004 self-titled album but remained unreleased. Smith described it as a sad song with a different kind of emotion, reflecting on a boy’s death and the broader theme of humanity.
In addition to these familiar tracks, Smith indicated that the upcoming album will feature completely new material that fans have not heard before. He noted that the album will include three songs slower than anything on their previous album, potentially making it a heavier record.
Smith is hopeful that the new album will be released before the summer, as it is currently in the final stages of mixing. If released this year, it will mark a quick follow-up to “Songs Of A Lost World,” their first studio album since 2008. Smith has been working on new music since 2010 and previously mentioned that this album is part of a planned trilogy. He also hinted at a catchy pop song in The Cure’s collection that could become a festive anthem with the right lyrics.
