Koe Wetzel’s Road to No. 1: The Story Behind a Viral Hit

Koe Wetzel achieved his first No. 1 hit on the U.S. Country Airplay chart with his collaboration with Jessie Murph, “High Road.” The song’s chorus contains a set of lyrics that have gained some viral attention: “I don’t need a ticket to your show / Knock yourself out and hit a new low.” In an exclusive interview with Taste of Country Nights, host Evan Paul inquired about the origin of these lyrics.

Wetzel revealed an interesting tidbit about the songwriting process. He admitted he is unsure if it was his idea or one of his friends’, jokingly adding, “I’d like to say it was mine, but I’ve drank a lot since then, so my memory is pretty bad. I think it was actually a joke.” He explained that the line started as a humorous remark about not needing a ticket to a show, and they all laughed about it.

Later, they realized it fit well with the song. Wetzel believes the unexpected nature of the line makes it stand out, contributing to the song’s success. The track’s popularity has propelled him to perform at packed venues across America. However, his energetic shows sometimes come at a cost, as evidenced by a recent week-long acoustic set with Hardy that resulted in Wetzel being hospitalized with a broken shoulder.
