Reflecting on the creation of their debut album, “Eternal Blue,” LaPlante and Stringer described the unusual process of working via Zoom amid the global pandemic. In contrast, the development of “Tsunami Sea” has been a markedly different experience.
Stringer expressed relief at having a more conventional release process this time around, saying, “It feels nice to have a more traditional roll out.” He added that “Eternal Blue” was more of an improvisational effort.
LaPlante agreed, emphasizing the newfound sense of control they felt with “Tsunami Sea.” She explained, “There’s less anxiety when you feel more in control. You’re not just being taken by the tide, but you’re driving instead of being in the passenger seat of what the world was able to do and not do during being completely shut down.”
In many respects, “Tsunami Sea” represents a fresh beginning for Spiritbox. Stringer referred to “Eternal Blue” as a snapshot in time, noting, “The moment it’s released, it’s not ours anymore.” Despite the unlimited time they had due to global circumstances, he felt there was immense pressure to complete it because of the high stakes involved.
Stringer mentioned that while they still face pressure with “Tsunami Sea,” it’s a different type. “You’ve earned the time and you’ve earned to be able to sit there and create and make sure this is the best body of work possible,” he remarked.
Spiritbox is a Canadian metal band formed in 2017, known for its dynamic blend of metalcore, progressive metal, and djent. The band was founded by husband-and-wife duo Courtney LaPlante (vocals) and Mike Stringer (guitar), both former members of the metalcore band Iwrestledabearonce. They were later joined by Bill Crook on bass.
Spiritbox gained attention with their debut self-titled EP released in 2017, followed by the “Singles Collection” in 2019, showcasing their ability to mix heavy guitar riffs with ambient soundscapes and LaPlante’s versatile vocal range. Their music often explores themes of spirituality, existentialism, and personal growth.
In 2020, Spiritbox released a series of singles, including “Holy Roller,” which became a breakthrough hit and topped SiriusXM’s Liquid Metal chart. This success was followed by their debut full-length album, “Eternal Blue,” released in September 2021. The album received critical acclaim for its innovative sound and solidified Spiritbox as a rising force in the metal scene.
Spiritbox is celebrated for their energetic live performances and the ability to seamlessly blend intensity with melody, earning them a dedicated fan base and spots on major music festivals and tours.
