Paul McCartney Wants Joe Cocker Inducted to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Joe Cocker, the late singer known for his distinctive voice, is a contender for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, with support from Paul McCartney.

McCartney, a member of The Beatles, has advocated for Cocker’s induction by writing to the Rock Hall’s international voting panel, which consists of over a thousand artists, historians, and music industry professionals. In a letter obtained by Billboard, McCartney praised Cocker as “a great man and a fine singer whose unique style made for some fantastic performances.” He specifically noted Cocker’s imaginative rendition of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” produced by Denny Cordell.

McCartney further expressed his belief in Cocker’s contribution to rock history, stating, “All the people on the panel will be aware of the great contribution Joe made to the history of Rock and Roll. And whilst he may not have ever lobbied to be in the Hall of Fame, I know he would be extremely happy and grateful to find himself where he deserves to be amongst such illustrious company.”

The note was signed, “Paul (McCartney).”

McCartney has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once in 1988 as a member of The Beatles and again in 1999 as a solo artist.

Cocker, who passed away in 2014, is a first-time nominee for the Hall of Fame. He is among 14 nominees for the Class of 2025, including Bad Company, The Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Maná, Oasis, Outkast, Phish, Soundgarden, and The White Stripes.

The Class of 2025 will be announced in late April. This year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles this fall, with further details to be released in the coming months.
