A Winter Adventure Through Central Ohio

If you glance out the window right now, chances are good you’ll be greeted by a bleak, cloudy day. While Ohio is no stranger to bright, sunny skies, those moments of radiance tend to dwindle as the calendar inches closer to year’s end.

December 2023 has already brought its share of weather mood swings: rain, sunshine, more rain, sideways snow, and, yes, even more rain. Freezing temperatures loom, ready to turn the season’s knee-deep mud into a fresh layer of permafrost.

But this is Ohio. We’ve seen it all before. When the weather doesn’t suit us, we wait an hour for it to change—only to grumble about what comes next.

Admittedly, these conditions can complicate travel. Still, the need for adventure persists. For me, it’s essential; without it, crankiness creeps in. Fortunately, adventure isn’t measured in miles. Whether staying close to home or heading somewhere sunny, winter offers plenty of opportunities to explore.

If you prefer to hibernate until spring, I get it—and I wish you well in the dark season ahead. But for those willing to venture out, here are a few suggestions for winter adventures that don’t require being cold, wet, or uncomfortable.

Museums

Museums are a go-to for me, and Ohio boasts some unique options beyond the usual fare. If museums sound unappealing, you might not be aware of these gems:

  • The Early Television Museum in Hilliard
  • The Troll Hole Museum in Alliance
  • The Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick in Cleveland
  • The American Sign Museum in Cincinnati

Immersive Art Experiences

This relatively new phenomenon in Ohio allows visitors to experience art in innovative ways—all indoors and warm. Check out places like Otherworld or Lighthouse ArtSpace Columbus for a unique, interactive take on creativity.

Small-Town Escapes

For those craving a quick road trip, Ohio’s charming towns provide a cozy adventure. Keep an eye on the weather and consider these destinations:

  • Versailles
  • Granville
  • Lancaster
  • Hocking Hills (Yes, you can stay cozy while enjoying the sights!)

Winter in Ohio may not always be easy, but it offers plenty of opportunities for memorable adventures—no matter how short the days or cold the nights.
