Hundreds gathered in North Las Vegas to hear Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez discuss the state of the nation and their vision for the future. Joined by Rep. Steven Horsford, the rally at Craig Ranch Regional Park was part of the “Fight the Oligarchy” tour, drawing around a thousand attendees.
The speakers criticized actions by the Trump administration, including significant cuts to Medicaid and efforts to dismantle the Department of Education. They targeted the influence of billionaires like Elon Musk, who is involved in government efficiency efforts, criticizing the concentration of wealth and power. Sanders emphasized the growing divide between wealthy Americans and those struggling to make ends meet, calling for changes such as campaign finance reform, universal healthcare, a higher minimum wage, and free public college tuition.
Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the importance of community in combating authoritarianism and corruption, urging attendees to organize and engage at the grassroots level. Both Sanders and Horsford underscored the power of collective action in achieving change.
The rally also touched on divisions within the Democratic Party, with Ocasio-Cortez commending some Nevada Democrats for opposing a recent Republican funding package, while criticizing others for not doing enough. Attendees expressed support for Sanders’ consistent advocacy for the working class and voiced frustration with current political dynamics, particularly the perceived inadequacies of the Democratic Party in opposing the administration’s policies.
