The Clark County School Board trustees have approved a $7.8 million plan to repair Earl B. Lundy Elementary School on Mount Charleston. This decision comes after the school suffered significant damage from the heavy rains and flooding caused by Tropical Storm Hilary in August 2023. The storm resulted in over 9 inches of rain in the region, leading to extensive damage, including to the main access route, Kyle Canyon Road.
Initially, the board voted against repairing the school, but community feedback prompted a reconsideration. In December, the trustees voted 5-1 in favor of restoring the school, with only Trustee Brenda Zamora opposing the decision. Without these repairs, local students would have faced the prospect of attending school 40 miles away or being home-schooled.
Martin-Harris Construction, LLC., has been contracted for the project, which involves replacing damaged floors, repainting exterior walls, upgrading the electrical system, and implementing erosion control measures. The district aims to reopen the school by the fall of 2025.
