The Clark County School Board is set to finalize a contract with Jhone Ebert, the incoming Superintendent, at their upcoming meeting. Ebert will begin her tenure on Monday with an annual salary of $385,000, and her contract is due to expire on April 14, 2029. She is eligible for a 5% annual bonus based on performance evaluations, amounting to an additional $19,250.
Ebert’s appointment follows a comprehensive selection process, culminating in a unanimous board decision on March 13. She transitions from her role as Nevada’s Superintendent of Public Instruction. Meanwhile, Gov. Joe Lombardo has appointed Steve Canavero as interim superintendent, with the State Board of Education currently in the process of selecting a permanent replacement.
The contract stipulates several conditions regarding resignation or termination. If Ebert or the board gives notice of termination, she must halt any personnel changes and salary increases. The contract allows for payout of unused vacation days annually, and in case of termination, her unused sick days will be compensated at her full salary rate, with a cap on sick leave payout at the end of a successful contract.
Ebert can resign with 90 days’ notice, receiving pay and benefits up to her resignation date, but forfeits any end-of-term benefits if she leaves early. The board can terminate her contract with 30 days’ notice, with continued compensation until the contract’s end if termination occurs within the last 12 months.
Termination “for cause” applies under specific conditions, such as certification issues, criminal convictions, or failure to perform duties, with Ebert entitled to a fair hearing. Additionally, the district will provide legal defense if she faces litigation in her capacity as superintendent. Her contract permits external consulting and engagements, provided they do not interfere with her responsibilities or conflict with board policies.
