Clark County Schools Superintendent Candidates Have CCSD Ties

The Clark County School Board is in the process of selecting a new superintendent for the fifth largest school district in the United States. The board recently conducted the first round of interviews with candidates John Anzalone and Jesse Welsh. Both candidates have extensive experience within the Clark County School District (CCSD).

John Anzalone, currently superintendent of the Camas School District, has over 20 years of experience in CCSD, including roles as an assistant superintendent and high school principal. Anzalone emphasized his plans to rebuild relationships within the district and enhance transparency. He highlighted the importance of school organizational teams and proposed a commitment to school safety through innovative technologies like AI cameras.

Jesse Welsh, CEO of Nevada State High School charter school, also has a long history with CCSD, having served in various educational roles. Welsh focused on the district’s challenges, such as staff vacancies and leadership turnover, while advocating for data-driven approaches to decision-making. He stressed the importance of leadership setting the tone for the district and proposed reforms to improve educator recruitment and retention.

The board will continue its interviews with two other candidates, Jhone Ebert and Ben Shuldiner, and plans to make a final decision on March 13 following community forums. The district has been without a permanent superintendent since Jesus Jara’s resignation, with Brenda Larsen-Mitchell serving as interim superintendent.
