Coldplay now holds the record for the largest-ever stadium shows of the 21st century, following two sold-out performances at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, according to Live Nation. The concerts, held Jan. 25-26, marked the band’s first performances in the country.
The British group played to more than 111,000 fans per night, totaling over 222,000 attendees across the two nights. This narrowly surpasses the record set by George Strait, who drew 110,905 fans to Kyle Field at Texas A&M University in June. Strait retains the record for the largest U.S. stadium concert.
Coldplay’s India shows are part of the band’s Music of the Spheres World Tour, which began in March 2022. According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, the tour has sold more tickets than any other in history, with 10.3 million tickets sold as of December. In January alone, Coldplay performed four nights at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi, three nights at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, and the two Ahmedabad shows.
The Music of the Spheres World Tour has been a global phenomenon, selling out stadiums across five continents. About half of the tour’s 175 concerts have taken place in Europe, where the band sold 5.2 million tickets over 87 shows. Additional sales include 1.8 million tickets in South America, 1.6 million in North America, 884,000 in Asia, and 848,000 in Australia. As of mid-December, Coldplay had sold more than 100,000 tickets at over half of the tour’s stops, grossing a total of $1.14 billion.
The tour will resume in April with shows in Hong Kong and Seoul before returning to North America. It is scheduled to conclude with 10 sold-out nights at Wembley Stadium in London.
