A Republican House member, Rep. Andy Ogles from Tennessee, has introduced a resolution to amend the U.S. Constitution to allow President Donald Trump and any future president to be elected for a third term. Ogles argues that Trump needs more time to reverse what he sees as the negative impact of the Biden administration and to restore America. He believes the current two-term limit, established by the 22nd Amendment, should be extended to three terms.
This proposal follows Trump’s recent swearing-in for a non-consecutive second term, making him the second U.S. president to achieve such a feat. The resolution also comes after a contrasting proposal by Rep. Dan Goldman, a Democrat from New York, which reaffirms the traditional interpretation of the 22nd Amendment’s two-term limit.
The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, was initially created to prevent the extended presidency exemplified by Franklin Roosevelt, who was elected four times. Trump has previously hinted at his interest in serving more than two terms. Some analysts, like Philip Klinkner, suggest alternative scenarios for Trump to remain in power without being elected directly, such as running for vice president and then assuming the presidency through specific constitutional mechanisms.
