Deadline Looms for MGM Data Breach Victims to Claim Settlement Compensation

Customers affected by the MGM Resorts International data breaches in July 2019 and September 2023 have until June 3 to submit claims as part of a class-action lawsuit. U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro tentatively approved a $45 million settlement in January, following a lawsuit initiated by guest Tonya Owens.

Compensation for victims is organized into a three-tiered system based on the sensitivity of the data exposed. Those whose Social Security or military ID numbers were leaked can receive $75. Exposure of passport numbers or driver’s licenses makes one eligible for $50. The lowest payment of $20 is for those whose name, address, and date of birth were compromised. All class members can also opt for identity theft protection and credit monitoring services.

Individuals who believe they incurred significant financial losses can submit claims for amounts up to $15,000, provided they can document their losses. There is a deadline of May 19 for those wishing to opt out or object to the settlement. The final settlement hearing is scheduled for June 18 in Las Vegas.

Douglas McNamara, serving as interim co-lead class counsel, noted the vulnerability of the hotel and entertainment sectors to cyberattacks, mentioning a similar incident involving Caesars Entertainment Inc. MGM Resorts has yet to comment on the settlement.
