The Dallas Cowboys recently announced that Mike McCarthy was out as head coach, and soon after, Deion Sanders emerged as a potential candidate. Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Cowboys star, is currently the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football team, a role he took on in 2023. Reports surfaced that the Cowboys had reached out to Sanders regarding the head coaching position. Responding to these reports, Sanders expressed his admiration for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and acknowledged the intrigue of the opportunity. However, he also emphasized his commitment to Boulder and the Buffaloes, highlighting his appreciation for the team, coaches, student body, and community.
Sanders recently completed his second season with the Buffaloes, leading the team to a 9-4 record after a 4-8 finish in his first year. Notably, Colorado’s Travis Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy. Although Sanders has shown interest in potentially coaching in the NFL, he has indicated that he would want to coach his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, with Shedeur being a projected early first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Support for Sanders taking the Cowboys’ job has come from former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and former NFL quarterback turned ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III.
