In late March 2024, the music community was taken by surprise when Erik Grönwall, the former frontman of H.E.A.T, announced his departure from Skid Row as their lead singer after a two-year tenure due to health issues. By the time this news was released, Skid Row had already enlisted Lzzy Hale from Halestorm to take over vocal responsibilities for the band’s forthcoming set of four concerts. This indicated that Grönwall had likely informed Skid Row of his decision to leave prior to the public announcement.
This change left Skid Row without what many considered their best lead vocalist since their separation from Sebastian Bach in 1996. Grönwall’s departure was even more unexpected given that Skid Row had released a new studio album, “The Gang’s All Here,” in 2022, which was well-received.
In an interview with Chris Akin for The Classic Metal Show around early November 2024, Skid Row guitarist Dave “Snake” Sabo acknowledged that Grönwall had encountered health problems while touring, and it was not financially feasible for anyone to significantly reduce touring commitments. Since their four concerts featuring Hale from May 17, 2024, to June 1, 2024, Skid Row has not performed live.
Grönwall posted the following message on his Facebook page, reflecting on his year:
“So, Mr. Erik Grönwall, was 2024 a successful year?”
“Define success.”
“Did you live according to your values?”
“I did. I maintained my independent perspective most of the time.”
“Did you prioritize your health?”
“Yes. I made some tough but necessary decisions for my well-being.”
“Did you wake up most days doing something you love?”
“Absolutely. Singing has been part of my daily life.”
“Did you treat people with respect?”
“Yes, to those who earned it.”
“Did you stay optimistic?”
“I sure did. Perspective is the key to happiness.”
“Were you there for your family and friends?”
“Yes, I made time for the people who matter.”
“Were you loyal to those you care about?”
“Without a doubt.”
“Did you manage to silence your ego when necessary?”
“I’d like to think so. It’s a work in progress.”
“Well then, Mr. Grönwall, it sounds like 2024 was a successful year.”
“You know what? I agree.”
Success is about understanding your values and living by them. You know who you are and what you want; don’t let anyone take that away from you. Happy New Year! Thank you for being part of this journey with me.
