Experience The Titanic’s Legacy with an Elegant Evening at The Refectory

April 15, 2025, marks the 113th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking, and enthusiasts of the historic ship have a chance to relive its romance and history.

The Refectory restaurant will host its annual Titanic event, “Lyrata: An Evening Aboard the Titanic,” on Monday, April 14. The evening will feature a four-course dinner, a string quartet concert, and displays of Titanic artifacts and film memorabilia.

Restaurateur Kamal Boulos said the dining tradition began 13 years ago on the 100th anniversary of the maritime tragedy. That inaugural event was an “over-the-top” affair that established the annual tribute.

“At the time, there was a swirl of public interest due to the milestone anniversary, and the movie had been out for 15 years, sparking interest in the story and history,” Boulos said. “This was set against the backdrop of discovering the wreck a dozen years prior.”

The 2012 event was a full-scale dinner theater experience with the restaurant dedicated entirely to the occasion. Guests, many in formal period attire, received replica Titanic tickets and were greeted by a sailor. Waitstaff in white bow ties and gloves served a five-course menu inspired by the ocean liner’s dishes.

The atmosphere featured Titanic images and videos, a live string quartet playing period music and selections from the movie soundtrack, while actors from Shadowbox Live, dressed in historical fashion, interacted with attendees.

“I dyed my hair and beard white and dressed as the ship’s captain, welcoming guests as they arrived,” Boulos said.

Since then, the event has been smaller, usually accommodating 40 guests.

The 2025 menu, crafted by Chef Richard Blondin, includes sparkling wine, white asparagus and smoked salmon salad, lobster thermidor marble, roasted filet mignon of beef, and chocolate éclair. Guests can preorder Petrossian caviar in addition to their meal.

Guests are encouraged to wear period attire for a more immersive experience.

The highlight will be a live concert by the ProMusica string quartet, Lyrata. Comprising members from the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and the New Albany Symphony Orchestra, Lyrata was established in 2016 and is the quartet-in-residence at the Refectory. They will perform music from the movie and historical pieces.

An exhibit of authentic and replica Titanic artifacts will be on display. Movie enthusiasts will also see memorabilia from the film, made possible by a collector from Akron.

Guests should arrive at 5:15 p.m., with the performance starting at 6 p.m. The cost is $165 per guest, plus beverages, tax, and gratuity. The caviar is an additional $95. Menu offerings can be modified for dietary needs.

The Refectory, located at 1092 Bethel Rd., has operated in a former church building since 1976. It is central Ohio’s only AAA 4 Diamond restaurant.
