Frontier Airlines Targets Southwest Customers with Free Checked Bags Promotion

Frontier Airlines has launched a new promotion aimed at attracting customers from Southwest Airlines by offering free checked bags and low ticket prices. This move follows Southwest’s recent decision to end its longstanding “bags fly free” policy. Frontier’s promotion, which runs through August 18, includes a free checked bag for flights booked with the promotional code FREEBAG. The offer is available for nonstop flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, but requires booking 21 days in advance and excludes certain blackout dates.

Frontier’s CEO, Barry Biffle, emphasized the airline’s commitment to customer satisfaction, contrasting it with what he perceives as Southwest’s departure from customer-friendly practices. Though the promotion is temporary, Frontier hinted at the possibility of making these benefits permanent based on customer response.

Southwest responded by highlighting its own customer-friendly policies, such as no change or cancellation fees and free in-flight entertainment, without the need for a promotional code. The airline remains a dominant presence at Harry Reid International Airport, while Frontier continues to build its operations there.

This competitive dynamic between the two carriers reflects their strategies to appeal to budget-conscious travelers, with both airlines operating modern fleets and serving a wide network of destinations.
