As I mentioned last week, we’re in for a big change this week. The new “gnx” album from Kendrick Lamar is causing a big shake up in this week’s hot 10. So let’s find out what songs he debuted this week in our Hot 10 recap for 12/7/24.
Leading off the survey is Mariah Carey, moving from 14 to 10 with All I Want For Christmas Is You. Fun fact: Mariah initially resisted creating a Christmas album, thinking it was premature for her career at the time, but her decision ultimately redefined holiday music history. The song has become so iconic that it reportedly earns her millions in royalties annually.
Now the first of seven debuts from Kendrick, starting with man at the garden at number 9. The title, potentially alluding to the Garden of Eden, symbolizes a quest for peace and fulfillment amidst life’s struggles. The narrative intertwines personal victories with communal uplift, reflecting Kendrick’s dual focus on individual growth and societal change. This balance makes the song a powerful addition to his discography.
Number 8 from “gnx” is Reincarnated. Kendrick often uses vivid imagery and deep metaphorical layers to challenge listeners to think about personal and societal change, and this song is no different.
Last week’s number two falls to 7, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ duet Die With a Smile. Inspired by the idea of ultimate fulfillment, the song reflects on embracing life’s fleeting beauty and the peace that comes with knowing you’ve loved fully.
Falling from number one once again, is Shaboozey with A Bar Song (Tipsy), coming to number 6. It had spent 19 weeks at the top spot, tying the record last week with Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus. The question is now, can an SNL performance take him back to the top of our survey? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Entering the chart at 5, is Kendrick Lamar’s Hey Now. A piece blending a breezy, West Coast-inspired melody with themes of reconciliation, self-acceptance, and the complexities of personal and professional life.
Lamar also takes number 4 with Wacced Out Murals. The title metaphorically suggests that someone has tarnished or disrespected his legacy, setting the tone for reflections on betrayal, perseverance, and staying authentic amidst external pressures.
Number three belongs to Lamar’s collab with SZA, ahead of their 2025 tour, entitled Luther. The title and the opening line, “If this world were mine,” echo Luther Vandross’s 1982 cover of a soulful classic, setting a reflective and aspirational tone. Kendrick weaves themes of justice, resilience, and transformation, addressing struggles and envisioning a world where dreams can multiply and adversaries face divine judgment. Meanwhile, SZA’s contributions highlight themes of vulnerability, survival, and hope, likening resilience to “concrete flowers” that grow in adversity.
Number two from Lamar is TV Off. The track delves deep into themes of authenticity, societal disillusionment, and rebellion against superficiality. The phrase “Turn this TV off” metaphorically suggests tuning out distractions and regaining focus on genuine values and connections.
Finally, Kendrick’s third number one of the year Squabble Up. The track reflects Kendrick’s critique of fictional narratives in rap, calling out artists who lack substance in their work. He positions himself as an artist grounded in truth and hard work, referencing his journey and the struggles he overcame without shortcuts. The song also hints at Kendrick’s readiness to unleash a more intense and “dangerous” persona, signaling his unyielding commitment to his craft.
So, a very interesting survey indeed this week. But can Kendrick keep this momentum? Or will Mariah Carey take number one for the sixth year in a row. Find out next week on the Hot 10 countdown. Next Monday at 9a on Hot Hits 95.3!
