Lady Gaga is set to return to Brazil eight years after withdrawing from Rock in Rio due to severe medical issues. The pop icon announced Friday, Feb. 21, that she will perform a special “Mayhem on the Beach” concert at Praia de Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro on May 3.
“It’s a great honor to be asked to sing for Rio – for my whole career, the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters,” Gaga wrote on social media.
The 14-time Grammy winner expressed her excitement about the upcoming performance, saying, “I’ve been dying to come perform for you for years and was heartbroken when I had to cancel years ago because I was hospitalized. Your understanding that I needed that time to heal meant the world to me. I am now coming back, and I feel better than ever and am working so hard to make sure this show is one you will never forget. Get ready for MAYHEM on the beach.”
In September 2017, Gaga had to cancel her Rock in Rio performance due to “severe physical pain” and hospitalization. At the time, she shared her disappointment on social media, writing, “Brazil, I’m devastated that I’m not well enough. I would do anything 4 u but I have to take care of my body right now.”
That same year, she opened up about her struggles with chronic pain caused by fibromyalgia in her Netflix documentary, “Gaga: Five Foot Two.”
The “Mayhem on the Beach” concert will take place about two months after the release of her highly anticipated seventh studio album, “Mayhem,” which is set to drop on March 7. The album includes hit singles “Die With a Smile,” “Disease,” and “Abracadabra,” along with two bonus tracks, “Kill for Love” and “Can’t Stop the High.”
