In a remarkable discovery, Clint and Evan Buffington stumbled upon a message in a bottle during their exploration of a remote island in the Bahamas. The message, written in 1976 by then 14-year-old Peter R. Thompson from Massachusetts, was found inside an old Pepsi bottle. Thompson, a student at Pentucket Regional Junior High School at the time, had crafted the note for an oceanography class, with the intention of having it cast into the sea by the Coast Guard.
Clint Buffington, who has a notable history of uncovering over 100 such messages across North America and the Caribbean, shared the moment of discovery with his brother via walkie-talkie. The brothers managed to contact Thompson, who expressed his astonishment at the find, despite not recalling the act of writing the message. He did, however, reflect fondly on his oceanography class.
The Buffington brothers hope to eventually reunite the note with Thompson in person, adding a personal touch to this extraordinary story of a decades-old message reconnecting with its sender.
