Oakland Athletics Advance Las Vegas Stadium Plans with $45.6M Permit Filing

The Oakland Athletics have taken a significant step forward in their plans to construct a new ballpark in Las Vegas by filing for a commercial building permit with Clark County. This permit, valued at $45.6 million, pertains to foundation and deep utility work required for the stadium, which is part of a larger $1.75 billion project. The groundwork is set to commence within the next three months, after the county reviews and approves the application.

The Athletics are required to invest $100 million into the project before accessing up to $380 million in public funding from Nevada and Clark County. As of December, the team had already spent over $50 million, and the upcoming foundation and utility work will push them closer to the necessary investment threshold. The team plans to fund the initial stages of construction themselves, with public funds supplementing later phases. The stadium, designed to hold 33,000 fans, will be situated on 9 acres of the Tropicana site, while Bally’s Corporation develops a resort on the remaining land.

To finance the ballpark, the A’s are also engaging with potential investors, aiming to raise $550 million. These investors would acquire equity stakes in the team. Major League Baseball has vetted several candidates, both from within Nevada and elsewhere.

Currently, the A’s are preparing for a presentation to the Clark County Commission to discuss the stadium project. This meeting will address various aspects, including a request for early excavation at the Tropicana site to maintain the construction timeline. The team will temporarily play home games at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento from 2025 to 2028 during the stadium’s construction.
