Phil Hellmuth Skips WSOP Main Event, Calls for Changes to Favor Skill Over Stamina

Phil Hellmuth, a prominent figure in the poker world and the record-holder for the most World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament victories, has announced that he will not participate in this year’s WSOP Main Event. The Main Event, known for its intense schedule, has become a considerable challenge for Hellmuth, who believes it disproportionately favors younger players due to its endurance demands.

Hellmuth, who has won 17 WSOP titles, expressed his concerns about the event’s structure and how it impacts older players. Despite his fondness for the tournament, he feels unable to compete effectively under the current conditions. The Main Event, which starts on July 2 and ends on July 16 in Las Vegas, features two-hour levels and often extends late into the night.

Reflecting on his storied career, Hellmuth noted that he hasn’t cashed in the Main Event since 2015. He has been known for his theatrical entrances, dressing as characters like Darth Vader in recent years. However, he suggested he might reconsider his participation if the event schedule included rest days, allowing for a greater focus on skill over endurance.

Hellmuth hopes that by 2026, the WSOP will implement changes to enhance the balance between skill and stamina, making the Main Event more accessible to a broader range of players.
