“Pink Floyd at Pompeii” Returns to Theaters with First-Ever Album Release

Pink Floyd’s iconic 1972 concert film, “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii,” is set to return to theaters this spring with its first-ever album release and 5.1/Dolby Atmos audio.

Originally directed by Adrian Maben, the film has been digitally remastered in 4K from the original footage, with enhanced audio mixed by Steven Wilson. It will be screened in cinemas and IMAX theaters on April 24, with tickets available starting March 5 at pinkfloyd.film.

“‘Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii’ is a rare and unique document of the band performing live in the period prior to ‘The Dark Side of the Moon,’” said founding member Nick Mason in an official statement.

The live album will be released on vinyl, compact disc, and digital audio on May 2, with pre-orders already underway. Below is the concert poster and complete track listing.

“Ever since my dad introduced me to ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ on repeat, Pink Floyd has been my favorite band,” said Steven Wilson. “I first saw ‘Pompeii’ from a grainy print at a local cinema. It made an incredible impression on me with its untethered and exploratory rock music made by four musicians that epitomized intellectual cool.”

Set in the ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater in Italy, “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii” captures the band performing without an audience just before the release of 1971’s multi-platinum “Meddle.” The setlist includes tracks like “A Saucerful of Secrets,” “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” and “One of These Days.”

The film was meticulously restored frame-by-frame after the original negative was discovered in five mislabeled cans from Pink Floyd’s archives.

“Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of ‘Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii,’ so the discovery of the original 1972 35mm cut negative was very special,” said Lana Topham, the band’s director of restoration. “The newly restored version presents the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute source edit of the performance with additional Abbey Road Studios documentary segments filmed shortly after.”

Tickets for “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii” will be available at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET / 2 p.m. GMT on March 5. Visit the event website for more information and ticketing details at IMAX and standard format cinemas.
