Pope Francis Passes Away: A Legacy of Humility and Service Lives On

Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced the passing of Pope Francis, who died at 7:35 AM after a prolonged illness. His life was dedicated to serving the Church and promoting Gospel values, especially advocating for the marginalized. Pope Francis had been hospitalized in February 2025 due to respiratory issues, including bilateral pneumonia, before returning to Casa Santa Marta to recuperate.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, had a history of respiratory problems, having undergone lung surgery in his 20s and experiencing recurrent respiratory illnesses later in life. In 2023, he canceled a trip to the UAE due to health issues.

In April 2024, he approved a new edition of the liturgical book for papal funerals, which will guide his own funeral rites. This updated Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis includes changes such as confirming death in a chapel and immediate placement in a coffin. The rites emphasize the pastoral and spiritual role of the Pope, focusing on the faith in the Risen Christ rather than worldly power. Archbishop Diego Ravelli highlighted that Pope Francis desired a simplified funeral rite to reflect these values.
