Atlantas own DJ Unk has passed away at the age of 43.
His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, shared the news on Facebook, asking for privacy and expressing her grief over the loss of her husband and the father of their children. Born Anthony Leonard Platt, Unk began his career in the late 1990s and co-founded Southern Style DJs with DJ Montay and DJ Jelly, organizing events throughout Georgia.
In 2000, Unk and Montay were signed to Big Oomp Records. Unk gained widespread recognition with his platinum single “Walk It Out” from his 2006 album “Beat’n Down Yo Block!” which reached the top 10 on the Billboard 100. Another track from the same album, “2 Step,” achieved gold certification. Unk experienced health challenges in 2009 that impacted his career, though he continued to release singles and was featured in the NBA 2K9 video game.
Unk was a huge infuence on the Atlanta Hip Hop Culture and he will be missed dearly.
