A new collaboration between two Ohio-based companies, Skyline Chili and Graeter’s Ice Cream, is making waves online. The limited-edition Skyline Spice ice cream is available while supplies last.

Described as “sweet, savory and unlike anything ice cream or chili lovers have tasted before,” the flavor has sparked debate among fans of both brands. Before trying the ice cream, I knew I had to experience the original dish first — a Skyline Chili 3-Way, featuring spaghetti, the chain’s signature sweet-yet-savory chili and a mound of shredded cheddar cheese. I expected to dislike it, but to my surprise, it was delicious.

That left one question: How would the hearty dish translate into ice cream?

Surprisingly, the answer is: really well. The first few bites hit with bold notes of cinnamon, clove and other undisclosed spices. But after the initial shock, the flavor settles into something reminiscent of a pumpkin spice treat. I was skeptical about the inclusion of oyster cracker chunks, as I typically don’t enjoy salty-sweet desserts. However, the combination blended together seamlessly. I can’t explain why it works — it just does.

Skyline Spice ice cream is available at Skyline Chili restaurants, Graeter’s scoop shops and select Kroger stores. It can also be ordered online and shipped nationwide.
