The stars of the show “Landman” are now able to discuss the series without worrying about spoilers, and they are taking full advantage of the opportunity. Billy Bob Thornton recently shared insights into two memorable scenes from the final episodes of the Paramount+ series. Season 1 of “Landman” concluded on January 12, and all ten episodes are available for streaming. Although Season 2 has not been confirmed, the main characters remain hopeful for its continuation. The series features Jon Hamm, Demi Moore, Ali Larter, and Michelle Randolph, alongside Thornton, who portrays an oil company landman named Tommy Norris. The Dutton Rules podcast team analyzed the finale in an episode set to release on January 14. This serves as a spoiler alert for those who have not yet watched Episode 10.
In the finale, Thornton’s character, Tommy Norris, learns that his friend and boss, Monty Miller (played by Hamm), might be dying. Despite this, he focuses on his responsibilities. After his promotion to president of the company, he enlists lawyer Rebecca (Kayla Wallace) to renegotiate a “farm out” deal that could either earn the company billions or lead to bankruptcy. Subsequently, Tommy is kidnapped by a drug cartel. He is tied to a chair with a sack over his head while the cartel’s henchman, Jimenez, inflicts torture. Thornton performed the scene himself, rather than using a stuntman. He described the experience as exhausting and intense, sharing that he leaned on the wall between takes.
Tommy is eventually rescued when a new character, played by Andy Garcia, kills Jimenez. Once freed, Tommy forms an uneasy truce with Gallino, which sets the stage for potential future developments if a second season is produced. Thornton mentioned that he is uncertain about the possibility of a second season. The series concluded in a manner that could serve as a wrap-up if necessary, with no major cliffhangers, although some plot points remain unresolved.
The final scene shows Tommy confronting a coyote that appears on his property. A week earlier, his neighbor had killed a coyote, but this time, Tommy is alone. He tells the coyote to run, reflecting on whether he is the coyote himself, a lone figure trying to survive, or if the coyote represents the cartel. Thornton explains that this moment is symbolic of Tommy’s introspection and confrontation with his identity and mortality. Monty’s fate is subtly revealed as he dies, marking Tommy’s transition from a landman to an oilman.
Ali Larter, who plays Angela Norris, expressed her enthusiasm for the role, highlighting Angela’s vibrant personality and underlying kindness.
