UNLV President Keith Whitfield Steps Down After Transformative Tenure

Keith Whitfield’s resignation as President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) marks the end of a significant chapter at the institution. During his tenure, Whitfield faced challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and a tragic shooting incident in 2023. Despite these obstacles, he managed to guide the university through substantial growth, including a rise in enrollment and graduation rates.

Whitfield announced his decision to step down at the UNLV Foundation’s annual dinner, citing family health concerns as the reason for his departure. He expressed confidence in the university’s leadership to maintain the momentum of progress achieved during his presidency. His resignation comes after a contract extension in 2024, reflecting the support he had from the UNLV community and faculty.

Under his leadership, UNLV launched the Top Tier 2.0 strategic plan, aiming to elevate the university’s status as a leading public urban research institution. This initiative focused on student success, economic diversification, and community engagement, among other objectives. The university also expanded physically, with new facilities and land acquisitions to enhance its infrastructure and support future growth.

Before joining UNLV, Whitfield held prominent academic positions at Wayne State University and Duke University, bringing a wealth of experience in academic leadership and research. His scholarly work includes over 200 publications and significant funding for research on topics such as stress and longevity in African American families.

Whitfield’s departure highlights his commitment to family, underscoring the personal challenges leaders often balance alongside their professional responsibilities. His contributions to UNLV leave a lasting impact, setting the stage for future advancements at the university.
