Kilmer died from pneumonia, having previously recovered from throat cancer diagnosed in 2014.

Kilmer’s career was marked by both its highs and lows. He began gaining attention in the 1980s with roles in films like “Top Secret!” and “Real Genius.” The 1990s saw him rise to prominence as a leading man in films such as “Tombstone,” “True Romance,” and “Heat.” Despite his success, Kilmer was often described as a challenging presence on set, a reputation he acknowledged but attributed to his dedication to his craft.

His role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in “Top Gun” became one of his most celebrated, although he was initially hesitant to take the part. Kilmer also faced challenges in his portrayal of Batman, which he later reflected on as being hampered by the restrictive suit and production dynamics.

In addition to his screen work, Kilmer had a passion for stage performance, notably in his one-man show “Citizen Twain.” He was a graduate of the Juilliard School and the youngest actor ever admitted at the time. Kilmer was also a visual artist, a poet, and a lifelong Christian Scientist.

Throughout his life, Kilmer experienced personal tragedies, including the loss of his younger brother Wesley at a young age. He was married to actor Joanne Whalley, with whom he had two children, Mercedes and Jack. Despite the ups and downs of his career and personal life, Kilmer expressed gratitude and a sense of fulfillment in his later years, stating he had “no regrets.”
