When Rock Shocked the Wilson Sisters – A Memorable Led Zeppelin Encounter

Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson recounted an early experience when she and her sister, Ann Wilson, walked out of a Led Zeppelin show due to Robert Plant’s suggestive performance. During a conversation on Premier Guitar’s 100 Guitarists podcast, dedicated to Jimmy Page, Nancy Wilson shared their first encounter with Led Zeppelin at the Green Lake Aqua Theater in Seattle in May 1969. She described being surprised by Plant’s stage presence, noting his open shirt and low-rise jeans, which made the performance feel overly suggestive.

At the time, the Wilson sisters were part of a small folk band and considered themselves relatively conservative. The intensity and suggestiveness of Led Zeppelin’s performance, particularly during “The Lemon Song,” prompted them to leave the venue. As a result, they missed the final two songs of the setlist, “Communication Breakdown” and “Whole Lotta Love.” Nancy Wilson mentioned that Led Zeppelin was supposedly opening for The 5th Dimension, although other sources indicate that the supporting acts were Three Dog Night and the Vancouver band Spring.
